چکیده

Introduction Acute severe asthma is one of the most common causes of visits to hospital emergency departments worldwide and accounts for the greater part of the economic and healthcare burden of the disease.1 Failure to appreciate the severity, inadequate emergency treatment, and delay in referral may lead to increased mortality and morbidity.2 Asthma is the most common respiratory emergency in clinical practice3,4 and is usually a failure of long-term control therapy. Several guidelines have been written for the management of acute severe asthma, however these guidelines may not have taken into consideration resource-poor areas like sub-Saharan Africa. There is a need for these guidelines to be reviewed and adapted for use in these regions of the world.

Noninvasive ventilation in severe acute asthma? Still far from the truth.

Despite the continuous improvement in the therapeutic strategy for asthma, there is still a subset of asthma exacerbations—severe acute asthma—that still requires access to the emergency department and, eventually, hospitalization.1-3 It’s estimated that approximately 5–10% of asthmatic patients experience a severe acute asthma episode in a given year, and that there are approximately 2 million...

Management of severe viral bronchiolitis and severe acute asthma.

Severe viral bronchiolitis and severe acute asthma are common causes of acute respiratory insufficiency in infants and children beyond the neonatal period. Both are associated with considerable morbidity and can be fatal if management is inadequate. However, it is possible to reduce mortality to a minimum with appropriate therapy. The term 'status asthmaticus' is not used in this review because...

Is ketamine a lifesaving agent in childhood acute severe asthma?

Children with acute severe asthma exacerbation are at risk of developing respiratory failure. Moreover, conventional aggressive management might be futile in acute severe asthma requiring intubation and invasive ventilation. The aim of this review is to detail evidence on the use of ketamine in childhood asthma exacerbations. A search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases was performed...
